Hello, this is Kaitlin!
This time I made a scarf packed with plenty of Aran cables!
The theme is “easy-to-remember Aran” —
with just one 8-row repeat.
On the wrong side you can mostly follow the same stitches as the row below (except for the bobbles),
so it works up smoothly once you get going.
At first you might think, “What on earth is this pattern?!”
but trust me —
you’ll get used to it so fast.
So go ahead and give it a try ♡
Materials:
・6 skeins Nuage col.01(69m/40g) or other worsted yarn
・4.80mm needles
・5.40mm needles(1 needle for cast-on only)(use a size that suits your tension)
・ Cable needle
・ Tapestry needle
・ Stitch markers
・ Scissors
・ Measuring tape
・ Steam iron
Gauge:
1 pattern repeat (51 sts × 8 rows) = 19.5 cm wide × 3 cm high
Sizes:
Width: approx. 19.5 cm
Length: approx. 160 cm
2x2 Rib
Cast on 50 stitches using the long-tail cast-on method. (= Row 1)
Row 2 (WS):
*p2, k2* repeat ** 11 more times, p2 (50 sts total)
Row 3 (RS):
*k2, p2* repeat ** 11 more times, k2 (50 sts total)
Rows 4–8:
Repeat Rows 2 and 3.
Work Row 2 on even-numbered rows,
and Row 3 on odd-numbered rows.
Set-up Rows
After completing 8 rows of 2x2 rib, work the following 2 set-up rows.

Pattern Rows 9–408:
Repeat Pattern Rows 1–8 a total of 51 times (8 rows × 51 repeats = 408 rows).
Note: Do not repeat the Set-up Rows.
Pattern Row 409 (RS):
Work as for Pattern Row 1. (51 sts total)
Pattern Row 410 (WS):
Work as for Pattern Row 2. (51 sts total)
After completing 410 pattern rows
(8 rows of ribbing + 2 set-up rows + 410 pattern rows = 420 rows total),
continue in 2x2 Rib as follows:
2x2 Rib (Ending Side)
Rib Row 1:
k2, p2tog, p1, *k2, p2* repeat ** 10 more times, k2 (50 sts total)
Rib Row 2:
*p2, k2* repeat ** 11 times, p2 (50 sts total)
Rib Row 3:
*k2, p2* repeat ** 11 times, k2 (50 sts total)
Rib Rows 4–8:
Repeat Rows 2 and 3.
Work even-numbered rows as for Row 2,
and odd-numbered rows as for Row 3.
After completing 8 rows of ribbing, bind off in pattern,
working the sts as they appear. (Video 48:35)
Changing Yarn
When the yarn runs low, join a new ball at the edge of the work.
Leave about 15 cm of the new yarn tail,
and begin knitting with the new yarn.
Keep both yarn tails resting at the edge of the work until weaving in later.
Weaving in Ends
At the yarn join, weave the old yarn tail downward and the new yarn tail upward. (Video 51:01)
Cross the two tails once, thread each onto a tapestry needle,
and weave them into the fabric for several stitches,
keeping them invisible on the right side.
Go one stitch backward and pass the needle through again to secure the tail.
Steam Blocking
Hold a steam iron above the fabric and apply plenty of steam to the wrong side. (Video 50:29)
Leave the piece undisturbed until it has cooled completely.
Generous steaming will make the Aran pattern beautifully defined!
Special Stitches Guide
Left Knot:
Pass the 3rd st over the 1st and 2nd sts.
Then knit the 1st st, yarn over, and knit the 2nd st. (3 sts total)
Bobble:
[k1, yo, k1, yo, k1 in same st], turn, p5, turn, *5-to-1 Decrease
*5-to-1 Decrease:
Insert the right needle knitwise into the next 3 sts as if to k3tog, slip them onto the right needle.
k2tog the following 2 sts. Then pass the 3 slipped sts, one at a time, over the k2tog stitch.
(5 sts decreased to 1, with the center stitch on top.)
2/1/2RC(center purl):
Slip 3 sts to a cable needle and hold in back.
k2 from the left needle.
Return the 3 sts from the cn to the left needle,
rearranging them as follows:
– Insert right needle as if to k2tog through the first 2 sts, slip both to right needle.
– Insert right needle knitwise into the next st, slip it to right needle.
Then insert the left needle into all 3 slipped sts at once and return them to the left needle.
Work the 3 sts as follows: p1, k1, k1.
(This creates a right cross with a purl stitch in the center.)
2/1/2LC(center purl):
Slip 2 sts to a cable needle and hold in front.
Insert the right needle into the next 3 sts as if to k3tog,
and slip them to the right needle without knitting.
Return the first of the 3 slipped sts to the left needle.
Insert the left needle into the remaining 2 slipped sts together and return them to the left needle.
Work the 3 sts as follows: k1, k1, p1.
Knit the 2 sts from the cable needle.
All finished — great job!
With bobbles, side cables,
and lots of other charming details,
