Hi, it's Kaitlin!

I made a carnation brooch that's perfect for Mother's Day.

It's quick to make, so it’s great as a gift!

Try using different colors to match the look of real carnations and make it your own.

Materials:

・Lace yarn, #40(thickness) – small amounts in red and green

・0.75 mm steel crochet hook

・Tapestry needle – size 20 or smaller (larger number = finer needle)

・Brooch pin

・ Wire, #26 – approx. 20 cm

・ Wire cutters

・ Two pliers

・ Scissors

・ Measuring tape

Size:

Height: approx.7cm

Maximum Width: approx.3cm

Maximum Thickness: approx.1cm

We'll start by crocheting the Flower Pieces.

Leave a yarn tail of about 15–20 cm, make a magic ring, and work Round 1.

Rnd 4

*ch 3,  sl st 1*  repeat ** 34 more times (35 times total).

ch 3,  Cut the yarn, leaving a 10 cm tail, and pull it through the last stitch.

Make a second one in the same way.

Flower pieces  [If changing colors on the final round]

If you're changing colors on the final round,

stop before completing the last double crochet of Round 3 (see video at 07:33).

Bring the old yarn over the hook from front to back,

and position the tail of the new yarn behind the fabric.

Yarn over with the new yarn and pull through all three loops on the hook at once.

Continue crocheting with the new yarn as usual.

Flower pieces  [Weaving in the Yarn Ends]

Thread the yarn tail onto a tapestry needle.

Insert the needle from front to back through the slip stitch of the last stitch in Round 3.

Then, insert the needle into the 3rd chain of the beginning ch-3—

where the yarn tail is coming from—as if returning into it.

To keep it from showing on the front side,

weave the needle through the back of the fabric.

Next, go back one stitch and insert the needle again in a U-turn motion to secure the tail.

Repeat the same steps to weave in the yarn tail on the second piece.

For yarn tails where you changed colors:

To prevent the tail from showing on the front,

weave the needle through stitches made in the same color as the yarn.

Then, go back one stitch and insert the needle again in a U-turn to finish securing the tail.

Flower pieces  [Assembly]

Use the yarn tail at the center (the starting end) to shape the flower.

Thread the yarn onto a tapestry needle,

and fold the crocheted piece with the right sides facing out to create gathers or pleats. (See video at 09:13)

Insert the needle from the inside toward the outside.

On the outside, to keep the sewing thread from showing,

pass the needle under one strand of yarn and bring it out through the next adjacent space.

Repeat this a few times to sew the piece using a running stitch.

Once several points are secured,

weave in the yarn on the inside of the piece where it won’t show on the front.

Attach the second piece with the pleats folded in the opposite direction from the first.

Sew it the same way using a running stitch, and when finished,

bring the needle out near the center where the piece was started,

making sure the stitching doesn’t show on the gathered surface. (See video at 10:53)

Adjust the placement so that the pleats of the two motifs alternate,

and stitch the centers together a few times,

checking the balance as you go. (See video at 11:03)

Be careful not to sew beyond the middle of the first round—

use that as a guide and avoid sewing too far upward.

After sewing a few stitches,

bring the needle out between the petals,

making sure the thread doesn’t show on the surface.

Use a running stitch to secure the petals where the two motifs meet.

When you finish sewing,

weave the needle through the fabric where it won’t show on the front,

then make a U-turn and insert the needle again to secure the yarn tail.

Next, we'll crochet the stem piece.

Leave a yarn tail of about 60 cm, make a magic ring, and work Round 1.

From Round 2 onward, work single crochet stitches in a spiral without making a turning chain.

Rnd 6 - 10

sc 12

To finish, after working the last single crochet,

make a slip stitch into the next stitch and pull the yarn to tighten.

Then chain 1, cut the yarn leaving a 20 cm tail,

and pull it through the last chain to fasten off.

Leaf pieces

Chain 6 to make the foundation chain.

For Row 1, work into the back bumps of the foundation chain.

To finish, ch 1, cut the yarn leaving a 5 cm tail,

and pull it through the last chain to fasten off.

Make one more in the same way.

Final Assembly

Start by attaching the flower piece to the stem piece.

Lightly fold a 20 cm wire in half and insert it through the lower part on the back of the flower piece. (video 18:47)

It's easier to insert the wire if you first open the stitches slightly using a tapestry needle.

Next, align the two wire ends and insert them into the stem piece.

Pass them through so that both wire ends come out from the center hole of the magic ring.

Then, thread the yarn tail from the end of the stem piece onto a tapestry needle,

and stitch the top V-shaped parts of Round 1 of the flower piece (see video at 19:28)

together with the top of the last round of the stem piece using whip stitch.

Since there is a height difference at the end of the stem piece,

start sewing from the back of the flower piece to keep the seam less noticeable.

Tighten the yarn as you go,

adjusting the position so that Round 1 of the flower piece sits neatly inside the top of the stem.

After sewing,

insert the needle back into the flower piece and bring it out through the center of the magic ring on the stem piece.

Next, fold the wire in half again and twist it tightly using pliers. (See video at 21:03)

Keep the folded end small and discreet—just enough to fit the tapestry needle through.

Trim the yarn tail from the whip stitch you just made,

cutting it just above the looped end of the wire.

Lay the trimmed yarn along the wire. While holding the cut yarn and the wire firmly in place,

begin wrapping the stem using the starting yarn tail from the stem piece. (See video at 21:45)

Wrap it tightly so it doesn't come loose.

Since carnations have visible joints on the stem,

create a slightly overlapped section while wrapping,

and continue wrapping for about 1.5 cm.

Next, while holding the wrapped yarn firmly,

prepare one of the leaves.

Lay the two yarn tails of the leaf along the wire

and wrap the stem yarn around them twice to secure them in place.

Set these two leaf yarn tails aside by bending them upward,

so they don't get wrapped any further.

Then, take the second leaf and align its yarn tails along the wire as well.

Wrap the stem yarn around them twice to secure them, just like the first leaf.

Again, bend the second set of yarn tails upward so they won’t be wrapped further,

and continue wrapping the stem.

Finally, rotate the carnation and continue wrapping the yarn all the way to the top,

covering the loop at the tip of the wire.

Once you’ve wrapped the yarn enough to leave room for a tapestry needle to pass through,

hold the wrapped yarn firmly in place.

Thread the yarn onto a tapestry needle and insert the needle from front to back through the wire loop. (video  23:06)

Before pulling the yarn all the way through,

insert the needle through the yarn loop,

then pull to tighten.Repeat this process to wrap the yarn securely around the looped end of the wire.

After wrapping, weave the needle through the wrapped yarn on the back side to secure the yarn tail.

Next, adjust the position and direction of the leaves and the wrapped yarn tails.

Weave in the leaf yarn tails on the back of the leaves where they won’t show on the front.

Attaching the Brooch Pin.

Insert the needle through the back of the flower piece, make a U-turn,

and stitch back toward the starting point by feeling your way through the inside of the fabric.

As you bring the needle out,

split the working yarn slightly with the needle to secure it.

Make sure the yarn is secured in place, then begin sewing on the brooch pin.

Pass the needle through all four points—

top and bottom of each of the two holes—twice each,

for a total of eight secure stitches. To finish,

weave the needle through the inside of the fabric where it won’t be visible,

pass it through a few times to secure the yarn tail.

After confirming that the pin is firmly attached,

trim the yarn tail. Finally, trim the starting yarn tail.

All done—great job!♪

This project works up quickly,

so it's perfect for a break between bigger projectsor when you just want to refresh your mind.

Give it a try when you have a little free time!
