Hi there, it’s Kaitlin!
This time, I made a shoulder bag using faux fur yarn—
a must-have for any fashion-forward look!
The main body is crocheted with super bulky yarn,
and then the faux fur yarn is added to finish off the flap with a plush, polished touch.
The base is made with single crochet stitches,
but by slightly adjusting where you insert the hook,
I created a fabric that’s both sturdy enough for a bag
and visually interesting with a subtle pattern.
Materials:
・5 skeins Basic Gokubuto col.32 (41m/40g) or other chunky yarn
・1 skein Savon col.01(56m/40g) or other chunky faux fur yarn
Sample used in the video
・ Gray and Light Blue 5 skeins Basic Gokubuto col.34, 1 skein Savon col.10
・Black and Green 5 skeins Soft Merino(86m/40g) (held double) col.12, 1 skein Savon col.08
・5.00mm crochet hook
・Tapestry needle
・Makers
・Magnetic snap (18 mm)
・D-rings – 2 pcs (inner diameter approx. 15 mm)
・ Bag chain with swivel hooks – 90 cm
・Scissors
・Measuring tape
・Steam iron
Gauge:
14sts × 16rows = 10cm × 10cm in Pattern Stitch
Finished Measurements:
Width: approx.21cm
Height: approx. 20cm
Depth: approx.8cm
Front Piece
Foundation rowStart with a slightly loose chain of 29 stitches.
Row 1
ch 1 as turning chain, 29 sc
After working each turning chain, pull the yarn to tighten it.For the sc in this row, insert your hook under both the top front loop and the back bump of each foundation ch. (Video 02:32)
Row 2
ch 1 as turning chain, turn your work, 29 sc
Row 3
ch 1 as turning chain, turn your work, 1 sc,
*1 sc into the next stitch of the row before last (two rows below),
1 sc into the next stitch of the prev row*
repeat ** 13 more times (14 times total).
When working into the stitch of the row before last,
pull the yarn out slightly longer than usual.(Video 05:22)
Row 4
ch 1, turn your work, 29 sc編み29
Row 5
ch 1 as turning chain, turn your work, 2 sc,
*1 sc into the next stitch of the row before last,
1 sc into the next stitch of the previous row*
repeat ** 12 more times (13 times total), 1 sc
Row 6
ch 1 as turning chain, turn your work, 29 sc
Rows 7-30
Repeat Rows 3 to 6
Row 31
Work the same as Row 3.
After completing the front piece, ch 1, then cut the yarn,
leaving a tail about six times the height of the piece.
Pull the yarn through the last chain to fasten off.
How to Change Yarn
When your yarn is about to run out,
switch to a new strand while the current stitch is still incomplete.
Changing yarn on the right side of the fabric
(In the pattern stitch section, odd-numbered rows are the RS.
In the ribbed section, even-numbered rows are the RS.)
With a partially completed single crochet,
bring the working yarn (tail end) from the front to the back over the hook.
Place the new yarn on the back side of the fabric,
leaving about 10 cm (4 inches) of tail.
Yarn over with the new yarn and pull through all three loops on the hook.
For the next few stitches,
place both yarn tails on top of the stitches and crochet over them to secure.
Changing yarn on the wrong side of the fabric
(In the pattern stitch section, even-numbered rows are the WS.
In the ribbed section, odd-numbered rows are the WS.)
With a partially completed single crochet,
bring the working yarn (tail end) from the back to the front over the hook.
Place the new yarn on the front side of the fabric,
leaving about 10 cm (4 inches) of tail.
Yarn over with the new yarn and pull through all three loops on the hook.
Let the two yarn tails rest as they are,
and continue crocheting a few more stitches.
After that, lightly tie the two tails together to temporarily secure them.
Leave them as-is until you weave in the ends later.
***When weaving in the ends, untie the knot first and then weave the tails into the fabric.
Back Piece
Work the same as the front piece, using the pattern stitch up to Row 31.
Once you finish Row 31, continue by working the flap in ribbed single crochet.
Make sure the ridges appear on the right side of the fabric.
Ribbed Section
Note: The ridges appear on the right side due to alternating front and back loop only rows.
Ribbed Section Row 1 (This is a wrong-side row.)
ch 1 as turning chain, turn your work, 29 sc front loop only. ※ For odd-numbered rows, insert your hook into the front loop only of the previous row.
Ribbed Section Row 2 (This is a right-side row.)
ch 1 as turning chain, turn your work, 29 sc back loop only. ※ For even-numbered rows, insert your hook into the back loop only of the previous row.
Ribbed Section Rows 3 -30
Repeat Rows 1 and 2 of the ribbed section.
● The ribbed section may be slightly narrower in width compared to the patterned section,
but this is completely normal and expected.
Rectangular Piece
This piece is worked from the center of the bottom, outward to both sides,
to maintain a consistent pattern without distortion.
Follow the same technique used for the front piece.
Start by ch 9 stitches with a slightly loose tension to create the foundation chain.
Row 1
ch 1 as turning chain , 9 sc
Row 2
ch 1 as turning chain, turn your work, 9 sc
Row 3
ch 1 as turning chain, turn your work, 1 sc,
*1 sc into the next stitch of the row before last,
1 sc into the next stitch of the previous row*
repeat ** 3 more times (4 times total).
Row 4
ch 1 as turning chain, turn your work, 9 sc
Row 5
ch 1 as turning chain, turn your work, 2 sc,
*1 sc into the next stitch of the row before last,
1 sc into the next stitch of the previous row*
repeat ** 2 more times (3 times total), 1 sc
Row 6
ch 1 as turning chain, turn your work, 9 sc
Rows 7–46
Repeat Rows 3 to 6
Rows 47–49
Repeat Rows 3 to 5
After completing Row 49, continue to work the attachment section.
Attachment Row 1
Turn without chaining, 4 sl st, ch 1 as turning chain, 3 sc
Attachment Row 2
ch 1 as turning chain, turn your work, 3 sc
Attachment Row 3
ch 1 as turning chain, turn your work, 3 sc
Attachment Rows 4–7
Repeat Rows 2–3 of the attachment section.
After finishing Row 7, ch 1, then cut the yarn, leaving a tail of about 30 cm,
and pull it through the last chain to fasten off.
Next, pick up stitches from the foundation chain of the rectangular piece and work in the opposite direction,
creating another section of 49 rows in pattern stitch,
followed by 7 rows for the attachment.
Begin by inserting your hook into the remaining front loop of the foundation chain.(Video 23:01)
After completing this side, ch 1, then cut the yarn, leaving another 30 cm tail,
and pull it through the last chain to fasten off.
Steam Blocking
Hold a steam iron above the crocheted piece
and apply plenty of steam to shape and smooth the fabric.
Do not press down directly with the iron.
Assembly
Start by attaching the magnetic snaps.
Insert the female side of the magnetic snap
from the front through the center single crochet stitch in Row 5 of the front piece.
From the back side of the fabric,
place the washer over the prongs and bend the prongs outward to secure it.
Next, insert the male side of the magnetic snap
from the back through the center ribbed stitch
in the 4th row from the end of the flap section on the back piece.
Place the washer on the front side,
and bend the prongs outward to fix it in place.
Be careful not to crush the visible loop of the ribbed stitch as much as possible.
Next, assemble the bag by sewing the parts together using a backstitch.
Align the front piece and the rectangular piece with right sides facing each other,
matching the center of the bottom edges.
From both openings,
sew toward the center of the bottom on each side using a backstitch.
Where rows meet, stitch row to row.
Where a row meets a stitch, adjust as needed to maintain a balanced shape.
Use any remaining yarn tails to sew the corresponding areas.
For areas without yarn tails,
secure the new yarn by threading it through the fabric,
then looping it back one stitch to create a U-turn,
anchoring it firmly before beginning to sew.
Sew the back piece in the same way as the front.
Pass the D-rings through the attachment tabs
and secure them to both sides of the bag opening by sewing them in place.
Finishing Off the Yarn
After sewing, weave in the yarn ends on the wrong side of the fabric,
making sure they do not show on the front.
To secure the end, pass the needle through the fabric,
then go one stitch backward
and loop the needle through the fabric again,
creating a U-turn.
Do the same for all other remaining yarn ends.
Faux Fur
Add the faux fur to complete the piece.
Begin at the bottom right of the flap,
and work from right to left. (Video 29:37)
Insert the hook into the front loop of the last row of ribbing (which appears as the back loop when looking from your working direction),
yarn over and pull up a loop,
then yarn over again and pull through the loop on the hook.
Insert the hook into the same stitch again and make a single crochet.
Then, insert the hook into the front loop of the next stitch (again, visually the back loop from your working direction)
and work another single crochet.
Repeat this process across the row.。
Once you’ve finished working single crochets across to the end of the row,
turn the piece and continue working single crochets into the front loops of Row 29 of the ribbed section.Repeat this process,
working single crochets into the remaining front loops of each ribbed row across the flap.
If a front loop is flattened or covered by the magnetic snap,
compensate by working 2 single crochets into the neighboring front loop.
Once you have completed the single crochets
into all the front loops of the ribbed section,
work around the outer edge of the flap in a U-shape with single crochet.
From the side (row ends),
pick up approximately 28 stitches,
and from the top (stitch side), pick up 29 stitches,
matching the number of stitches in the row.
When picking up from the row-end side,
insert the hook one stitch inside the edge.
When picking up from the stitch side,
insert the hook into the remaining back loops of the final row of ribbing.
After working all the way around the flap in a U-shape,
chain 1,then cut the yarn, leaving a 10 cm tail,
and pull it through the last chain to fasten off.
Finally, attach the bag chain by hooking the swivel clasps onto the D-rings.
All done—great job!
This bag is more spacious than it looks,
so I hope you’ll give it a try. It’s fluffy, fun, and super cute!
